    BSC X DISTANT LOCAL

    NICK'S STORY

12 miles is the distance of 50 football fields. To walk it would be about 4 hours.

Nick Gabaldón was an African American surfer in the 1950s who paddled that distance from Venice to Malibu, so to be able to surf without fear of being racially hassled. During that time, people of color were segregated to 2 blocks of beach called Inkwells, or risk harassment and harm.

We’ve partnered with Black Surfers Collective on this special edition of our LA map that shows his iconic paddle and hopefully creates a talking point to encourage more diversity in our sport. This organization teaches people of color to swim and surf, as well as educates and invites them into the surf culture.

The proceeds from the sale of this tee will go to Black Surfers Collective - Check out their site HERE to learn more. Our Distant Local crew is so proud to be a part of the important work they are doing!

Below are a few movies if you want to learn more about this legendary surfer -

“It doesn’t matter where you come from because those who have love for the ocean are all part of the same family - there’s no surf like home.”
